Before you purchase a used car, however, it’s important to do some research to be sure you that the vehicle you buy will last.

Before you start shopping for a used vehicle, you will need to establish a budget. Many used car dealers are willing to negotiate price, so be prepared to do some bargaining. If you find a car you are interested in but the price is too high and the dealer just won’t budge, don’t buy it! There are so many used cars out there; you’re bound to find another one that you love. You will also need to make a list of must-haves for your vehicle based on reliability, performance, safety, economics, and prestige. This should help narrow down your options to a few makes and models; it’s always easier shopping for a used car when you have a better idea of what you are looking for.

Once you find a car you would like to purchase, learn as much as you possibly can about it. Be sure to ask the dealer for maintenance and repair info. Test drives the vehicle and tries all of the features, including the brakes, windshield wipers, power windows, etc. You can also use the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to get a vehicle history report. This costs about $30-$50 but is extremely important and worth every penny. The vehicle history report will let you know of any events in the vehicle’s history.
